NYRF 2008 – Crossbones Mini-Me Breaks Lionel!!!
ByBackstory for non-NYRFers: Labor Day Monday has come to be known as “Black Monday” at the New York Renaissance Faire. At the center of the 17-faire-day season, it was when the vendors could usually expect to have covered their expenses for the season, and thus be ‘in the black’. That name has evolved, since, into a day of pranks and in-jokes, an extra bit of bawdiness or any number of out-of-the-ordinary things. Two of my recent favorites (the barmen dressing in drag and the suicidal idiocy of Jay dressing up in a full-on bunny costume), have now been supplanted by baby Ned, who showed up for Black Monday dressed as Dr. Crossbones McCoy, guitarist and Mr. Hyde of The Crimson Pirates. When McCoy’s portrayer, Lionel Ruland, caught sight of his doppelganger in mid-song… he broke character and stopped the show! Huzzah and good on you, little pirate, for stealing the show!!!
